Stockton, California
Stockton, California is the largest city in area in California’s Central Valley. With a population of close to 300,000, Stockton is California’s 13th largest city. Stockton is located about 64 miles east of San Francisco. Like nearby cities Tracy and Manteca, Stockton experienced a population boom from 1995 to 2005 as a result of many commuters choosing to live outside of the Bay Area as an alternative to San Francisco’s high cost of living. Located along the San Joaquin Delta waterway, Stockton, along with Sacramento, is one of California’s only two inland sea ports.
Although Stockton’s economy is based primarily on agriculture as a leading processer and distributer of farm products and wines from the Central Valley, its economy has recently diversified into telecommunications and manufacturing and has become a hot spot for companies interested in renewable energy.
The University of the Pacific is located in Stockton, with an emphasis on music, education, engineering, pharmacy and business schools. The University also supports the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco and the Pacific McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento. The town is currently revitalizing its downtown waterfront area, including a baseball stadium, indoor arena, hotels, apartments, restaurants and shopping.
